Why learn PowerShell? This question has been on the minds of IT professionals since the powerful tool’s implementation in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. With Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 just around the corner, PowerShell has become an integral part of the next generation of Windows. Now in version 3, PowerShell is a must-have skill for admins who… well, who want to make their lives easier and more productive.

The Inventor of PowerShell, Jeffrey Snover on PowerShell v3

Jeffrey Snover is the mastermind behind PowerShell as well as the Lead Architect for Windows Server 2012. He has been telling IT professionals to start learning PowerShell for years now, explaining the importance of mastering the tool to save their careers. When I met with Jeffrey last year at TechEd, he told me a great story of an IT professional getting a promotion and a raise just by learning PowerShell [watch my interview with Jeffrey Snover].

In our most recent interview, Jeffrey continues to stress the importance of learning to automate processes while embracing the technologies that make administration and management more efficient, namely PowerShell and the Windows Management Framework 3.0, which PowerShell v3 is now a part of.

So why should you learn PowerShell?

Well, if you’re planning on working with Windows Server 2012, then you should know that there are now well over 2,400 cmdlets to learn (compare that to only 230 cmdlets in Windows Server 2008 R2). PowerShell is such an important part of the new Windows Server os that admins simply won’t be able to manage without it.

So get started with PowerShell today and… learn to get a little lazy.
